Henan University of Science and Technology (HAUST) is located in Luoyang, well-known as the thousand-year ancient capital and the peony flower city, which is also the sub-center of the city cluster in central plains of China. HAUST is a model university of Deepening Educational Reform of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, a national-level Continuing Education Base for Professional and Technical Personnel, the first rank of Scientific and Technological Achievements Transformation and Technologies Transfer Bases accredited by the Ministry of Education. It’s also one of the three key comprehensive universities in the high-level construction project of Henan Province. HAUST developed from its earliest foundation in Beijing in 1952. In 2002, Luoyang Institute of Technology amalgamated Luoyang Medical College and Luoyang Agricultural college to form Henan University of Science and Technology. Adhering to the Motto of “Cultivate Virtue, Study Extensively, Develop Innovations, Practice Earnestly” and the spirit of “Encourage Self-improvement and Pursue Excellence”, HAUST has been putting education first and giving academic development top priority, which enables students to develop fully their talents and core competitiveness. HAUST has preliminarily developed into a high-level comprehensive university with outstanding engineering advantages and coordinated development of agriculture, medicine, management and the other disciplines. In 2021, HAUST ranked 95th among Chinese universities by Airuishen Alumni Network. The university is composed of 4 campuses, covering 757 acres. And now, there are 42,000 full-time undergraduates, graduates, and international students and 24,000 continuing education students on campus. So far there are 31 schools offering 100 undergraduate programs in 11 disciplines that comprise science, engineering, agronomy, medicine, economics, management, literature, law, history, art and pedagogy, among which there are 8 first-level disciplines offering doctoral programs, and 3 post-doctoral research stations and also 41 first-level disciplines offering master’s degree programs. Five disciplines, including engineering, materials science, clinic medicine, agronomy, and botany & zoology, ranked in ESI’s global top 1%. The university is granted 15 national and provincial designated programs, 13 pilot projects on programs reform, 3 disciplines on Provincial Key Discipline Construction Project and 28 provincial first-level disciplines. The faculty members are composed of more than 1,200 professors, associate professors, senior technical personnel, and 1,350 teachers with PhD degrees, among whom there are over 100 part-time academicians, national scholars, professors on the 100-1000-10000 Talents Project, chairs on the Yangtze River Scholar and Innovation Team Development Plan, chief scientists on Scientist Studio of Central-Plain Scholars, Famous Teachers of Henan Province, Provincial Distinguished Professors and Provincial Academic and Technical Leaders. And there are 2 national-level and 7 provincial-level teaching teams, and 2 provincial-level teams on scientific and technological innovation. In the medical field, there are 11 affiliated hospitals and 7 other teaching hospitals. The No. 1 Affiliated Hospital ranks in the top 100 best hospitals nationwide. The university has 7 national-level platforms, 83 ministerial and provincial-level platforms, and 2 provincial key university research bases in humanities and social science. In recent years, HAUST has undertaken 70 national major projects and national key research and development projects and more than 400 projects of National Natural Science Foundation and National Social Science Foundation. HAUST was also honored with The Second National Innovation Prize, 3 second prizes of National Science and Technology Progress, and 16 first prizes of provincial or ministerial awards. More than 400 high-level papers have been published in “Lancet”, “Nature” and other international top journals. In terms of innovation and entrepreneurship educational activities, the excellent performance of students won HAUST the top 17th and 27th in China’s “Internet Plus” College Students’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition Finals. This achievement put HAUST in the top 60-80 in National University Discipline Competition Ranking. So far, over 330,000 graduates working as senior professionals have made distinguished contributions to China’s economic and social development. HAUST is determined as the only university of talent cultivation and technical support for the bearing industry in China. The university was one of the first universities recognized by the Ministry of Education to enroll international students. It has carried out exchanges and cooperation with more than 200 international universities and institutions in the countries including USA, UK, Russia, Canada, and Australia. Overseas undergraduates, graduates, and language students from 20 countries have enrolled at the university. Standing at a new historical point, HAUST has set the goal of building a “high-level comprehensive university with its own characteristics” to strengthen the construction of “Double First-Class” for the mission of talent training, scientific research, social service, cultural inheritance and innovation, international exchange and cooperation, and for greater contribution to the construction of the sub-center of the city cluster in central plains of China.
