Formerly known as South China Institute of Technology, the university was first established in 1952. Unifying several major institutes of technology in Guangdong province at the time, and also joined by relevant departments and disciplines from universities in other provinces at the time, the university and its predecessors have a long history in education and research, especially in training talents of engineering and technology.
In 1995, SCUT was approved to join the list of “Project 211”, which is a Chinese national endeavor aimed at strengthening top institutions of higher learning as a national priority for the 21st century. Then in 2001, the university was approved to be a member of “Project 985”, which is the state’s most significant education project for founding world-class universities.
Determining to take more active and efficient roles in globalized educational environment and international academic activities, SCUT has established connections and corporations with over 50 overseas universities, being committed to multiple programs aimed at promoting talent cultivation and scientific research. There are international students from more than 100 countries in the campus, studying Chinese language and culture, natural science, engineering, and business management.
SCUT is located in Guangzhou which is very near Hong Kong and Macau. It has two campuses: the Wushan campus and the University Town campus. The Wushan campus is located in the Tianhe District of Guangzhou. It is an attractive area with rolling hills, lakes, lush greenery, and brilliant flowers. This campus has a mixture of both traditional and modem architecture with a truly collegiate feel. The HEMC campus is located in the recently built University Town of Panyu District. It has an open and spacious environment filled with beautiful landscaping and innovative and modem architecture.
About Guangzhou
Guangzhou, located at the north of the Pearl River delta, is an important trading center as well as a busy port and the capital city of the province of Guangdong. Guangzhou has a history of more than 2,800 years.
There are a lot of interesting legends concerning its past. One of the beautiful stories which gives the city its name Goat Town says that five gods riding on five goats brought the first grain to the city. So, it is also known as the City of Five Goats.
The climate of Guangzhou is sub-tropical. The average year-round temperature is 22℃. August is the hottest month, with an average temperature of 28℃. January is the coldest month, with an average of 13℃. The rainy season falls between April and August. Average annual rainfall is 1,720 mm.
Guangzhou is also one of the most important centers of foreign commerce in South China. The Chinese Export Commodities Fair has been held twice a year in the city since 1957. It is also a cultural center. There are several universities, the Zhongshan University, the South China University of Technology, the Ji-nan University and so on.
Guangzhou is a beautiful city with an ever-green scenery and flowers blooming all the year round. The city boasts many tourist attractions, among which highlights are White Cloud Hill Scenic Spot. Yuexiu Park, Guangzhou Zoo, Six Banyan Temple and Flowery Pagoda, Dr. Sun Yatsen Memorial Hall, etc.
About The School of International Education (SIE)
The School of International Education (SIE) is an international student administrative organization of South China University of Technology (SCUT), which integrates with international student education, administration and the academic research.
One of SIE’s missions is to provide high value-added language education and training programs to help the international students to improve their competitiveness in the new knowledge-based economy where China plays a significant role.
SIE also offers Undergraduate Programs with Medium of English. The programs are designed for students who would like to pursue high quality degree courses of English as teaching medium, as well as an intercultural experience and exploration in China. All courses are delivered in English by highly qualified lecturers and original English textbooks and teaching materials are used.
Library
The library of South China University of Technology was established in 1952, with the Foreign Textbooks Centre directly under the State Ministry of Education and the Novelty Search Workstation at the ministerial level authorized by the State Ministry of Education, is among one of the largest libraries of the key polytechnic universities. The library of SCUT currently consists of the North Campus Library, the Branch Library of Chemical Machinery on the north campus and the South Campus Library.
In recent years, the library has been attaching great importance to the development of electronic document resources. To help build a high-level university under the “211 project” and “985 project”, and to meet the needs of the teachers and students for diversified information, the library is gradually and in a planned way installing various kinds of foreign and domestic databases.
At present, teachers and students of the university are able to search and utilize over 2,040,000 volumes of foreign and domestic electronic books, electronic periodicals and the electronic versions of graduate students’ dissertations via the campus network.
Campus Life
SCUT Student Union (SCUT SU)
SCUT Student Union (SCUT SU) is a student mass organization under the leadership of CPC SCUT Committee and Guangdong Student Association, and the direction of SCUT Youth League Committee. It is the longest-standing, best-managed, and most energetic student organization in SCUT.
Student-oriented SU has organized a variety of campus cultural activities since its establishment. It leads and collaborates with its school-level branches under the guidance of the Four S Spirits – self-confidence, self-empowerment, self-esteem, and self-discipline. It is a bridge between SCUT students and the University. The activities it has organized are instructive and colorful earning great popularity on the campus. SU is truly an organization from the students and for the students. It has found a novel way of educating for all-round development with SCUT characteristics.
Sports facilities (University Town Campus)
Sports facilities on the University Town Campus are relatively concentrated. Apart from the outdoor badminton courts, football field, basketball courts and volleyball courts in the living area, there are tennis courts, a swimming pool, and a sports stadium opposite to the teaching buildings. There are basketball courts and East Sports Ground nearby. Across Donghuanzhong Road from Sports Stadium is West Sports Ground and a smaller basketball court.
