Taiyuan University of Science and Technology is the first heavy machinery undergraduate college in New China. The school is an excellent university in the evaluation of the undergraduate teaching level of the Ministry of Education (2006), and was selected as a university supported by the Ministry of Education’s Central and Western University Basic Capacity Construction Project (2016).
In 1952, the predecessor of the school, Shanxi Machinery Manufacturing Industry School, was established. Mr. Zhi Bingyuan, the founder of modern China's machinery industry and the pioneer of China's internal combustion engine development, served as the principal. In 1953, the school was placed under the Central First Ministry of Machinery Industry. In 1955, Changchun Automobile School and Hankou Machinery Manufacturing School merged with the forging and punching majors. In 1960, it was renamed Taiyuan Heavy Machinery College. In 1965, Dalian Institute of Technology and Shenyang Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering merged with the major of hoisting and conveying machinery. In 1998, it was changed to be co-constructed by the provincial and ministerial departments and mainly managed by the province. In 2004, it was renamed Taiyuan University of Science and Technology.
The school adheres to the spirit of "forging ahead with hard work and seeking truth". After more than 60 years of unremitting efforts, it has now developed into a work-oriented, liberal arts and sciences as the two wings. The main disciplines of equipment manufacturing have distinctive characteristics, such as science, engineering, philosophy, law, A teaching and research-oriented university where nine major disciplines, including literature, economics, management, art, and education, support each other, and the multi-level education of bachelor, master and doctoral degrees is reasonably connected.
The school currently has 64 undergraduate majors, including 1 national-level comprehensive reform pilot major, 5 national-level characteristic major construction sites, 7 provincial-level characteristic majors, 6 provincial-level advantageous characteristic majors, and 11 provincial-level brand majors. There are 4 national first-class majors, 18 provincial first-class majors, and 6 majors that have passed the professional certification of engineering education.
The school currently has 1 provincial-level “1331 Project” advantageous characteristic discipline, 2 service industry innovation discipline groups, 3 provincial-level key disciplines, 15 provincial-level key construction disciplines, and engineering disciplines rank among the top 1% of ESI in the world; There are 3 doctoral degree authorization points for first-level disciplines and 16 master's degree authorization points for first-level disciplines; it has business administration (MBA), law, social work, electronic information, machinery, materials and chemicals, resources and environment, energy and power, and transportation. , 10 master's degree authorization points in engineering management; there are post-doctoral research stations in mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering.

In 2017, Professor Huang Qingxue, director of the Engineering Center of the Heavy Machinery Education Department of our school, was successfully elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
The school currently has nearly 26,000 full-time students, and has high-quality teaching resources such as national and provincial-level college students' innovation and entrepreneurship demonstration bases, college students' off-campus practice bases, experimental teaching demonstration centers, quality courses, and quality video open courses. The school has the Ministry of Education's "Hundred Schools Project" Big Data Application Innovation Center and the Ministry of Education's ICT Industry-Education Integration Innovation Base. The school's mechanical design, manufacturing and automation major is the first in Shanxi Province to pass the engineering education professional certification, and the employment rate of graduates has ranked among the top universities in the province for more than ten consecutive years.
Since the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan", the school has successively won 4 National Science and Technology Progress Awards, 1 National Technology Invention Award, 1 Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Innovation Award and dozens of provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, and has participated in major national scientific research for many times. In 2015, the number of authorized national invention patents entered the top 20 national universities. Since 2016, the total amount of financial support received by the school in the construction of the "1331 Project" in Shanxi Province has ranked fourth in the province's universities.
The school is an active advocate and pioneer of industry-university-research cooperation. In 2001, the school united more than 40 key machinery manufacturing enterprises across the country, including Taizhong Group, Taigang Group, Liugong Group, Xugong Group, and Shantui Group, to establish an industry-university-research board of directors. Sany Heavy Industry, CITIC Heavy Industry, Zoomlion, Xugong, Liugong, Luoyang Bearing and other more than 200 enterprises across the country have established a strategic cooperation (alliance) relationship with industry, universities and research institutes, and cooperated with Jiangsu Haian County to build the Haian Forging Equipment Industry Research Institute. Cooperate with Jincheng City, Shanxi Province to build Jincheng Industrial Technology Innovation Research Institute.
